Biography

Was born in Mexico City where she began to study sculpture aged 15 at Mexico City College. In 1952 she was granted a 3 year scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London where she received the A.R.C.A. diploma.

In 1986 she was elected associated member of the Académie Royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique.

In 1991 she was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship.

In 1999 she received the FONCA scholarship, Mexico City.

Her concern with site specific, ecological and urban problems is ref lected in her ephemeral installations where she uses found materials or natural ones, such as paper, earth, branches, shards of glass or pottery, fabric and straw, to name a few.

She has had 35 solo shows, participated in over 100 group shows and has built 30 permanent works in countries that include Mexico, Canada, the U.S., Cuba, London and Israel.

Her major exhibitions have been held at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, at the Helsingin Taidemuseo in Helsinki, at the Ordrupgård Museum Copenhagen, the Museé d'Art de Quebec, Canada, MOMA Oxford, England and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, amongst others.

She published one book: Mexican Monuments, Abbeville Press, New York, 1989.
