documenta X

21 June - 28 September 1997

Kassel, Germany

Direction: Catherine David

138 participants in the exhibition

100 Days - 100 Guests

Our Special addresses the (low) presence of artists from Africa, the Americas and Asia/Pacific in documenta 10. Catherine David, the artistic director, was expected to make a fundamental opening-up in this direction. Our compilation of a range of quotations from her statements on "non-Western" art, and comments by others on this subject reveals why David's exhibition was ultimately seen as a great disappointment in this sense.

A first version of our special we already published in UiU in 1997, when the official website of the documenta hardly offered any photos or information about the exhibiting artists. We decided to produce this new version in order to make the content and photos (now in much better quality) accessible for mobile devices as well.

100 Days - 100 Guests

In "100 Days - 100 Guests", art specialists, artists, filmmakers, writers, philosophers, economists, architects etc. from all over the world were invited to lectures, discussions and artistic performances. The focus was on film, theatre, music and literature. One declared aim was to "to reflect the multiplicity of contemporary cultures - including non-European cultures in particular - and to present them as fully, vividly and flexibly as possible".
