Originally the building was home to the Scuola di Santa Maria e di San Girolamo, better known as the Scuola di San Fantin or the "College of the Hanged Men" because the College members were obliged to accompany the death sentenced men on their last walk.
The façade, built around 1580, was designed by Alessandro Vittoria.
