51st International Venice Biennial Pavilion of Turkey
Hüseyin Chalayan: The Absent Presence

This year, the artist and designer supported by Turquality Hussein Chalayan’s work will take place in the Pavilion of Turkey at the International Venice Biennial which is one of the most important art events of the world that keeps going on for more than 100 years. The Pavilion of Turkey realized under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and sponsored by Turquality, Garanti Bank and shop&miles&club is expected to attract a great number of visitors during the Biennial (12 June-6 November 2005). Hussein Chalayan will take place with his interdisciplinary work he created based on his knowledge on identity, place, genetic, biology and anthropology, at the Pavilion of Turkey which will be at the Levi Foundation building on the Canale Grande.
Export Chief Executive’s adjunct of the Foreign Trade’s Under Secretariat Ziya Altunyaldiz who made a speech on behalf of Turquality said: "We want to reflect Turkey’s perspective toward the world and the future with the brands and designers that we support. The fashion designers undertake a great role in the cultural communication. To support a Turkish designer as Hussein Chalayan, who combines the fashion design and an advanced level of creativity, in fashion and other cultural activities has a very important meaning for Turquality. According to us, Hussein Chalayan is not only a cultural envoy of Turkey in the creativity field, but he’s also a very good representative of Turkey’s face turned to the future and the Turkish culture."
The vice president of one of the project’s sponsors Garanti Bank, Nafiz Karadere affirmed: "After the Turks exposition performed in England on the past months, we are now very happy to provide a corporate sponsorship to the Pavilion of Turkey at the Venice Biennial. We believe that with his identity that stands out in the international contemporary design, Hussein Chalayan will represent Turkey in the best way. This project which is the continuation of the Garanti Bank’s support to the contemporary art, will constitute an important step in the promotion of Turkey with the mediation of art."
One of the other supporters of the Project Garanti Payment System’s General Manager Mehmet Sezgin said: "Supporting the work of Hussein Chalayan, who has also designed the &club privé cart, in the Pavilion of Turkey at the 51st Venice Biennial, as a sponsor is the symbol of the vision of catching the contemporary of &club. With the intermediary of the Pavilion of Turkey at the 51st Venice Biennial, we believe that new opportunities which will change Europe’s view of Turkey will be created."
Beral Madra will be the commissar and the curator and the owner of Galerist Murat Pilevneli will held the coordination and the production of the project which will be realized under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. The Venice Biennial Pavilion of Turkey is realised with the collaboration of Istanbul Bilgi University and IKSV (Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts).
Hussein Chalayan, who was born in 1970 in Nicosia, graduated from Central St. Martins with a fashion degree. He was chosen consecutively two times the Designer of the Year at the England Fashion Awards. His works were exhibited in personal or group exhibition in important art centres as Centre d’Art Contemporain, Victoria & Albert Museum, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Tate Modern and Museum of Modern Art. In April, a retrospective exhibition of Hussein Chalayan’s 10 years fashion and art works was organised in the Gröniger museum in Holland with the support of Turquality. A 192 paged book was published for this exhibition. In his videos which he has edited and produced their decors, Chalayan integrates the languages of fashion design, furniture design, installations, experimental theatre, music and cinema. The artist who is a Turkish citizen has been living in England since he was 15 years old.
