The rules of the game, 2000-2001
Video and photo documentation, files and sport props

The work consists of 2 parts and was created for Insite 2000, the 4th edition of the bi-national exhibition project in San Diego (USA) and Tijuana (Mexico).

For the first part, Artigas had 2 Mexican soccer teams play against each other in the gymnasium of the Lázaro Cárdenas school in Tijuana, at the same time and on the same playing field as 2 basketball teams from San Diego. The thought behind this is one of coexistence without interference: people can live in the same area and do their own thing without having to disturb one another.

For the second part, a playing field with a high wall was constructed only 2 meters from the fenced-off border of the USA, in the Colonia Libertad quarter on the outskirts of Tijuana, a meeting point for those attempting to emigrate illegally. The residents immediately adopted the playing field as their own, adding a basketball hoop. The back and forth of the game, during which the ball sometimes goes over the fence, becomes a metaphor for the fate of the migrants who make it over the fence, are caught, and are sent back again.
