Ellen Pau: Interview
From an interview by Pat Binder and Gerhard Haupt.

The video installation »Recycling Cinema« is a projection which is programmed to automatically move back and forth at a 120 degree angle onto a wide, arched paper screen in a dark room. The video shows a highway in Hong Kong nearby the sea. It was recorded by a moving camera, and images themselves, the cars, are also moving in different directions and at different speeds. This causes the viewers a kind of irritation and loss of orientation, because the frame is moving continuously on the screen, while the image itself is at times moving in the opposite direction.

In this piece I am interested in questioning the way we see things, in order to make us more aware of our own existence.

The other video in the adjacent room is about the search and the longing, the feelings of desire, when one waits for something to happen, and anticipates what that something could be. It's about the disappointment that comes with waiting. Anticipation heightens the desire, and time stretches into infinity. Suddenly, what you expected appears - in the case of the video, a vehicle on the highway. For a moment we're satisfied, but immediately afterwards we're once again expectant.
