The high doorstep has a dual function: it forces those who want to enter the Temple to humbly bow and look downwards and secondly it literally functions as a threshold for wandering ghosts, who tend to shuffle and would thus trip over the obstacle.
However, prosaic sources reveal that the high threshold merely served as a means of flood protection.
