The "Merlion" half-lion and half-fish, is the icon of Singapore. This 8.6 metres creature was designed by Fraser Brunner and built by Mr Lim Nang Seng in 1972.
The island was mentioned for the first time in the 14. century as "Temasek", meaning "sea" and being symbolized by the Merlion's fish-body. Legend has it that Singapore received its new name because Prince Sang Nila Utama spotted a lion here ("singa" - Lion, "pura" - City). In accordance, the fish-body was completed with a lion head.
