Opened 1887 by the Sarkies Brothers, named after Singapore's founder Sir Stamford Raffles. Originally it was a little estate at the waterfront, but since the land reclamation at Marina Bay it was pushed further inland. The grand French Neo-Renaissance building was completed in 1896 and was renovated extensively during the early 1990s. Today the Raffles is a luxury hotel as well as a hotspot for tourists.
