Formerly the site of the oldest prison in Singapore, it became the Hill Street Police Station in 1934. This largest official building of its time once again became a prison during the Japanese occupation, but was reinstated as a police station right after World War II.
Since 1983 various governmental institutions and the National Archives were situated in the building. Today it is the seat of the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts and some of its departments, such as the National Arts Council.
