Encounters 14
Information for potential volunteer helpers, 27 March 2006
Organized together with the National Library Board
National Library, Singapore

The ultramodern building of the National Library is one of the exhibition sites of the 2006 Singapore Biennial. Together with this institution, the Biennial organizers extended an invitation to attend an information evening to explain to potential volunteer helpers what the point of this art event is and how they can contribute to its execution.

Roger McDonald and Eugene Tan, two members of the curatorial team of the first Singapore Biennial, gave the introduction and made themselves available for discussion. They showed some works by artists whose setting up or realization will require helpers. As other possible volunteer tasks, they discussed visitor tours, watchman services, and assistantships in public relations and administrative tasks.

Lam Moy Yin from the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) summarized fundamental aspects of volunteer work in Singapore and made those present in the hall aware of the kind of desires, requirements, and attitudes they should be clear about before taking on such work.

From the part of the Singapore Biennale, Tan Chee Sean is the coordinator for the volunteer helpers. He described how they will be given qualifications for their tasks and drew attention to additional available information.
