The 4th event in preparation for the Biennial was the
press conference held on December 1, 2005, at which time the final
title, exact concept, and additional details of the Singapore Biennial
2006 were made known to the public. Corresponding with the Biennial’s
theme of "Belief," a venue rich in associations was chosen:
the Sri Krishnan Temple.
Before entering the Hindu temple, the "Encounters 4" participants
had to remove their shoes on the opposite side of Waterloo Street,
which is a pedestrian zone here. In the meantime they were greeted
by musicians. Then the temple’s trustee, P. Siva, officially
welcomed the guests and guided them inside. A blessing ceremony for
the Singapore Biennial 2006 was held before the Shrine of Sri Krishna,
the ninth incarnation of the god Vishnu, first received by the honorary
guest representing the Biennial and then by all the other participants
(see photographs and the video
sequence).
The press conference audience later moved to the assembly room on
the fourth floor of the community building. Fumio Nanjo, artistic director
of the Singapore Biennial 2006, clarified choosing "Belief" as
the theme in the context of people of different origins, cultures,
and religions living alongside and together with one another in peace,
through which Singapore’s national identity is essentially defined.
Yet in a wider and further-reaching sense, the works shown at the Biennial
should deal with the act of belief in of itself and its changing definitions
and implications in today’s uncertain and insecure times.
The co-curators present for the occasion (apart from
Ahmad Mashadi, unable to be in Singapore this month) presented the
first 5 exhibition venues and briefly introduced the 16 artists and
groups, from some altogether 80, whose participation in the Biennial
is already certain.
