Impressions of Sharjah |
| In April 2004 we were invited to the Design Talks at the School of Architecture and Design of the AUS. After this visit we published an article on the school. We were very impressed with the high level of education and positive atmosphere of the teaching/learning environment, which sparked in us the idea of proposing a mutual project. People visiting Sharjah, even those who travel there for the Biennial, usually only get to know the touristic aspect of the city. In spring 2005, mediated by their professor for photography, Tarek Al-Ghoussein, we asked students of the School of Architecture and Design of the AUS, if they would like to put together a small photo series, which would convey to outsiders their personal impressions of the city in which they live and study. The result are these "Impressions of Sharjah", which provide a glimpse onto different layers and faces of the city: the fast development, the constant construction activities, the merging of and contrast between new and old, the reconstruction of references of the past, the search for a local identity, the living areas of the foreign workers, and more... Most of the photos are accompanied with short comments by the authors . We thank the students, as well as Tarek Al-Ghoussein for participating in this project. Gerhard Haupt and Pat Binder
