Voyage to Shanghai. 2004
The work refers to the tradition of the "Piñata", a type of celebratory object, originated in China, where it was seen by Marco Polo. From the 14th century on, it spread throughout Southern Europe. Spanish missionaries brought it to America, where it syncretized with local traditions. In Mexico the "Piñata" is still very popular.
Humberto Vélez buildt this "Piñata" with Shanghai craftsmen. At the opening, it was smashed open by blindfolded people releasing the sweets and goodies inside.
