As with all previous Biennials, this year too had numerous parallel exhibitions on Cuban art. What was new this year, was that an astounding number of artists showed their works outside of institutional structures. At first, officials attempted to prohibit these kinds of private initiatives. However, obviously in order to avoid scandal, a few of the exhibits got last minute support from institutions (like the Ludwig Foundation).

The official exhibitions as well as those in private homes, studios or restaurants, were only open for the few days in which the foreign Biennial visitors were in Havana. There was no catalog, at best small flyers were passed out.

Since there barely exists any information or documentation on the exhibitions, we introduce some of the more interesting ones here.
