The theme of the 4th Gwangju Biennale is literally to be understood as "pause". The organizers believe that after the hectic of the 20th century, it is now, at the beginning of the new millennium, time to stop, reflect upon the past and "destroy and renew old paradigms". But one could also simply enjoy the pause as such ....
Emphasized among that which is new, compared to previous editions of the Gwangju Biennale: the abandonment of the main vs. special exhibition structure as well as the categorization by continents and art form, in favor of theme-based projects. Also new are the numerous workshops, lectures and debates, as well as events held in public spaces, in which visitors can also participate.
