| Man and Space |
| The third edition of the Gwangju Biennale strove to "put mankind, in its historical civilization-development, at the center of the exhibition, and to inquire about the conditions humaines in the past, present and future" [1]. The theme "Man and Space" was created from the separation of the Chinese characters It is remarkable that, after the demand for dissolution or transgression of all boundaries in the first two Gwangju Biennales (see the first and the second), the central exhibition had again a geographic determined approach, in which curators were called for individual regions of the world, and that these were also presented separately. Furthermore, the artistic director Kwang-su Oh curated a comprehensive section. See our overview of dates and facts. Remark: 1) Eine kunstsoziographische Betrachtung der Kwangju-Biennale. Birgit Mersmann spoke with Won-Il Rhee, the curator for the exhibition section "Western Art" at the Kwangju Biennale. Kunstforum, vol. 153, January - March 2001, p. 430 |
