3rd Gwangju Biennale 29 March - 7 June 2000
Man and Space
The third edition of the Gwangju Biennale strove to "put mankind, in its historical civilization-development, at the center of the exhibition, and to inquire about the conditions humaines in the past, present and future" [1].

The theme "Man and Space" was created from the separation of the Chinese characters in (in = man) and kan (kan = space), between which there is a plus sign. Both elements together are the character for "human beings".

It is remarkable that, after the demand for dissolution or transgression of all boundaries in the first two Gwangju Biennales (see the first and the second), the central exhibition had again a geographic determined approach, in which curators were called for individual regions of the world, and that these were also presented separately. Furthermore, the artistic director Kwang-su Oh curated a comprehensive section.
