The second edition of the Gwangju Biennale also took place under the theme of surmounting national borders and the paradigm center-periphery, this time however in a much more complex sense. Chief curator Young-chul Lee derived the theme "Unmapping The Earth" from the Korean expression "yeobaik", which stands for empty space, emptiness, and purity, and related it to nearly everything: the cosmos, politics, sexuality, etc. (see the review by Richard Vine, which also includes information on the number of visitors as well as the budget).

In the five areas of the main exhibition - according to statements of various reviewers - there was not much to be seen, however, of the highly complex theoretical pretense and the all-embracing surmounting of traditional boundaries and conventions. Five basic concepts were each assigned to an element or a substance, and for each, one curator (all men) conceived the corresponding exhibition (see information). |
