The biennial for contemporary art from the Americas has been held since 2002. It is named for the state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil. The state's capital city, Fortaleza, hosts the event. Fortaleza lies near the estuary mouth of the Ceará river at the Atlantic, has over 2 million inhabitants, and owes its economic development mainly to the one of the largest ports in the country. The biennial aims to help make the city, which is far removed from the art centers located in southern Brazil, into another meeting place for the national and international art scene. The Bienal Ceará América's main venue is the Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura, opened in 1999. It is equipped with over 30,000 sqm of floor space, and runs a museum for contemporary art, among other things. Parts of the exhibition will also be shown at other locations and in public spaces throughout the city. Here, the close proximity of inner-city and riverbank areas is meant to be an important point of departure.
