Closure ahead of time

Originally, the Biennale was planned until January 18, 1998, but it was closed a month before. As stated in a notice in artnet.com from December 16, 1997, it had to do with financial difficulties faced by the city of Johannesburg, responsible for the greatest part of the budget.
